Congratulations to anyone who is 65 years and older! You have reached a major milestone in your journey. Any intelligent person has only the utmost admiration and respect for the advanced life phase. The mainstream refers to you as senior citizens, the elderly, older adults, seniors, and retirees. It is truly a badge of honor. Upon reaching seniority, one should have a level of wisdom and spiritual maturity that is golden, thus, referred to as the golden years. That makes you a resource of knowledge and inspiration for the younger generations.
Unfortunately, the value of the older person is often downplayed and overlooked. We are living in a youth-glorifying society that views getting older as an unwelcome event. It is understandable that a society uplifts their youth who are bursting with freshness, energy, innovation, and new possibilities. Most importantly, every young person literally represents our future. No one wants to pass the gauntlet over to someone who is not capable or worthy. It is imperative that they receive the proper guidance and direction to yield the highest quality individuals. However, the youth must be receptive to learning from their elders. It appears that the generation known as the Millennials, ages 25-40, have a mindset that does not respect the older generations (Generation X, Baby Boomers, & older). I have a few ideas where that originates that will be discussed in a future post. I will say that not respecting the value and benefiting from those that have come before you is a huge mistake that will have repercussions.
The situation is magnified by old age being frowned upon by the general public. Many attempts are made to avoid or delay the inevitable process. The only true way to avoid it is to die while young and that is considered a tragedy. When I was in my twenties, I had a friend who was about to turn 30. A few days before his birthday he lamented, "I would rather be dead than to turn 30. I don't want to get old!" Can you imagine viewing 30 years old in that manner? How ridiculous and overly-dramatic he was behaving. His perception of getting older was twisted and based on ignorance. Fortunately, for him, the universe ignored his ignorant proclamation and as far as I know he is still breathing. Anyone who recognizes the core meaning of life and their purpose looks forward to getting older.

"Of all the self-fulfilling prophecies of our culture, the assumption that aging means decline and poor health is probably the deadliest." Mary Ferguson, The Aquarian Conspiracy, 1980 |
We all want to live a quality life blessed with good mental and physical health. Senior adulthood is associated with loss of health and mental acuity, loss of physical attractiveness, and ultimately, loss of life. It is scientifically proven that growing older makes us more susceptible to brain disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease and various physical illnesses. The older individual is less marketable in the workforce and business world. Aging makes one less of a prospect for the dating scene and romance. It hits women a lot harder than men due to women having more definitive physiological changes by way of menopause, including inability to create children. In contrast, although men do go through a similar mid-life crisis event, it does not pack the same punch as menopause. Furthermore, older men never lose their ability to reproduce which yields more young people. Therefore, a greater stigma on female aging exists in our society. The fields of science, traditional, and alternative medicines are continually promoting anti-aging regimens to delay the process. People are willing to try everything from Cryogenics to Botox to find their fountain of youth. However, all living species must bow down to their biological time clock. No one has yet discovered or publicized a way to stop it. Hopefully, they never will cuz Mother Nature don't like to be messed with!
Just like wine we get better with time!
Growing old gracefully and in good health is a gift from our Creator. During the aging process, all types of problems pop up that diminish our health and physical appearance. The best way to counteract that is to live a healthy lifestyle. If you take care of yourself while you are young you will have less problems when you get older. Most adults know the basics of eating properly, exercising, and getting adequate sleep is mandatory. A few other essential health practices include proper skin care, drinking plenty of water, washing your hands frequently, protecting your skin from the sun, avoiding tobacco, excessive alcohol consumption, and illegal drugs. The foods we eat are not the same (GMO) nor the pesticide-infested soil they grow from. Therefore, it is a good idea to invest in nutritional supplements to replenish what our food is lacking. Many alternative medicine and homeopathic practitioners will collect blood or saliva samples from you that identify your specific nutritional needs. The health practitioner will then design a customized food/supplement regimen for your unique needs. If a healthy lifestyle does not prevent/resolve issues, then a specialist should be consulted for application of more advanced technologies.
As I grow older, my wisdom is growing by way of experiences, epiphanies, and revelations. The lessons I learned from my elders are proving themselves as correct. Have you ever realized later in life something you were taught earlier was absolutely true? Every other day, I come across a situation that has me thinking, "Mama was right!" Also, I have discovered things that have given me insight into circumstances I was unaware of previously. As a result, I'm thinking, "Aaahhhh, that is why that happened. That is why he or she acted that way." My growing number of experiences has made me more understanding of other people's mindset and circumstances. I may not agree with everything, but I understand the "why" of many past and present situations. If it had not been for me reaching this point in my life I would hold the same misconceptions. Pieces of the puzzle start to come together and stuff starts to make sense...at least, that is how it should be. Unfortunately, there are some silly immature seniors out here that refuse to evolve. Shame on them! The wisdom I have acquired can be passed onto the younger generations. If people did not get old, there would not be that special wisdom that only time can cultivate.
The primary reason people are afraid of getting old is because death is the next stage 💀. Spirituality teaches us that the purpose of life is to evolve and transcend to higher levels. Although we have different journeys, the ultimate goal is to advance or ascend. There are levels to this thing we call life and other dimensions to engage. As part of this spiritual ascension, we acquire wisdom and insight as we move to the next level. On a scale of creation, our physical world is considered one of the lower dimensions. Our physical bodies allow us to interact and navigate within a physical world. Naturally, one cannot keep the same body in a higher world. What appears as the body falling apart and breaking down to the point of death is the shedding of one body for another. Everyone moves from one existence to another. If you play your cards right (good karma), you will acquire a better body in a higher realm of existence. If your overall vibrations are low (bad karma), you will descend to a lower dimension and take on a body suited for that frequency. Thus, death is simply transition, not the end, but the beginning of something else. Whatever that something else is depends on you.
'No one can avoid aging, but aging productively is something else." Katharine Graham
